12 miles of Blah

I was not feeling it this morning.  Everything for my run was set to go great!  I joined the running group (one of them I belong to) for my first group run with them.  There were ~15 other people running about the same pace as me, which I did expect to ever happen.  The route was amazingly beautiful (for the most part).  Here are the views from the path when I arrived:

Then the running started.  I was not feeling it at all.  My feet hurt.  My thighs chaffed (for the 1st time ever when running).  There were mole hills (hello walking).  It got warm faster than I thought it would.  My head hurt.  Oh the stinging in my eyes from sweat.  The doubting thoughts started in (can I really come anywhere close to my goal?  i should just walk the half.  i can't do this today or any other day).  It was rough.  I put on a partial happy-facade and let people know I was ok.  After all, doubts and chaffing happen - I just didn't need them plaguing me today.

When all is said and done, I know I can run the distance I am training for (13.1).  I know I can try my best to meet my time goals.  I know I will persevere.  I know today is only one run of many and I'm working on accepting that bad runs happen.  I just have not ever had a 12 miler that was so tough on me before.

Training plan:  12 miles at 10:15/mi
Today:  12.00 miles at 10:20/mi (2:04:08 time)
Calories:  Enough so I can eat lots at my appetizer get together this afternoon
Stops:  This was new to me...the group stopped for water at mile 3, 6, 10.  I'm not used to all out stopping, but it was nice to have gallons of water stashed along the route.
Hills requiring me to walk:  3 (I can't ever move anywhere hilly because I'll have to retreat to all treadmill running)
Miles with Maddie:  1.6 miles yesterday
Temperature: at start ???, at finish 72F (63 relative humidity)
Splits:  all over the place (low 9:50/mi, high 11:06/mi)
Walking away with:  a sense of what a bad run is like when I'm heathy and the knowledge that even when I have a bad run I can still manage to finish my miles

I Need Sunglasses


  1. I always run with my sunglasses on when I am outside!  It doesn't matter if it is cloudy, sunny, light or dark out.  The problem is my current sunglasses are breaking.  I hope to get a couple more months out of them, but I really need to think about replacing them.  So, if you were going to get new running sunglasses on a budget, what would you buy?
  2. I did not run this morning.  I was going to but then I thought about it and I ran 4 times in 5 days so sleep was in order for this morning.  It felt great to sleep 11 hours!  I have to enjoy it now because fall semester (known as my LAST semester before graduating with my masters' to me) starts on Monday.  I don't have to get up early for class on Monday, but I know there will be homework and things I need to do next week so I'm just enjoying my last free Friday.
  3. Punky's room is 95% done.  There are a few things here and there that I need to do in her room sometime, but for the most part the transition from Winnie the Pooh to Princess is complete.  Some of you asked for pictures, so here they are (please remember I am not known for my decorating skills and I caved when she wanted polka dots and princesses whether they matched or not).

Anti Monkey Butt Review and Giveaway - Closed

The bottle of Lady Anti Monkey Butt sat there for a week before I opened it up because I just wasn't sure where to use it (I'm usually not a powder person).  First up was trying the powder in my shoes before a long run.  When I got home from my run my feet were dry, there were no blisters, and there was still visible powder between my toes.  I did the smell test next.  My shoes smelled like my feet, but it was not nearly as bad as usual.  Once I tried the Lady Anti Monkey Butt on my feet I was ready to try it other places.  You know the places...anywhere prone to rubbing.  I loved it and while my thighs still rub, there has been no chaffing or even uncomfortable skin since using this great powder.

Two for Tuesday


  1. Keeping it simple today.  I ran both yesterday and today!  I'm finally getting back to my Monday morning runs and I know once I catch up on my sleep it will make a big difference.  I had my long run on Sunday so I did a slow three miles on Monday.  It was rough going at times, but I made it work.  This morning I ended up with 5.95 miles (1 mile warm up, 6 x 800 (.15 mi RI), 1+ mile cool).  You may wonder why I didn't do another .05 miles.  It is because I like ending my treadmill runs by time and not by distance.  Tonight I head back to No Boundaries to help mentor the new runners.  They are up to 1.5 miles tonight!  I can't wait to see how they do with the extra .25 mile added on.
  2. This weekend was an interesting one for us.  When summer break started I had a chat with the kids asking what they wanted to do this summer.  High on Bugs' list was taking ADP bowling.  We finally made it to the bowling alley on Friday night.  I suck at bowling, but the kids were having fun until...
...Punky fell and her bowling ball landed on her thumb.  Friday night's take:  one pizza, bowling one game, one broken thumb.  It was not how I hoped the evening would go, but we are dealing with it.  Thankfully, young kids are resilient and the break is not causing any pain so it is life as normal in our house.

I tried all three lines from the Softlips Pure line (source for all images).  I tried the glosses and tints when I was running, swimming, out running errands, gardening, over and under lipstick.  My favorite was the lip gloss, especially when running and in combination with lipstick.  I put the Softlips gloss on before my run and there was still gloss on my lips long after my run!  (Vaseline doesn't even last my whole run.)  I really liked the gloss over lipstick, it felt like my lips were moisturized and shiny.  The downfall is that when I run I occasionally wipe my mouth with my shirtsleeve and I now have one gloss mark that doesn't want to come out of my shirt (I washed and dried the shirt before remembering the spot was there, so it wasn't treated).  I have a feeling that if you treat the spot before washing it will come out without much work.
The lip balm did not hold up as long while running, but it is still worth getting!  It was my favorite to wear swimming and when I needed something a little more weight.
I tried out the lip polish and loved it!  Although, I don't have much reason to exfoliate my lips during the summer so after trying it out I put it in the closet to await winter.  I love running outdoors during the winter and my lips can take a beating with the cold air.  I think the lip polish will work to keep my lips looking good and hopefully not all chapped.

127 Days

This morning did not work out completely as planned.  I was supposed to meet a friend to run but I did not read my e-mail closely enough so I went to the wrong place (it was too far to get there quickly so we both ran alone).  It was raining out so I did not want to run ten miles outside all alone.  So, I did a quick assessment of where I was, what my options were, and I called ADP to let him know I was headed back to our little corner of the world to go here:
Yes, I have a gym membership.  I was not planning on going to Gold's Gym this morning so I did not have my membership card, ear phones, music or anything of the sort.  When I got there I could not just swipe my card (because it was home in my gym bag) so I signed in with reception.  When I sign in I asked "how long?" out of curiosity.  She knew exactly what I was talking about:  127 days since the last time I had signed in.  I hate wasting money, so I gave myself a mental lashing and then called ADP to thank him for faithfully going to the gym 3x/week to make our membership worth it.

I started on the treadmills upstairs and was very bored by mile 3.  Then I remembered the cardio theater! Oh, how I love the cardio theater.  There was a movie playing that I really didn't want to watch (The Lovely Bones), but without music or even earphones to plug into the treadmill TV upstairs it was my best option.  I found a treadmill in the back row (probably the noisiest treadmill I've ever been on) and promptly changed treadmills and finished out my 10 miles.

When I've mentioned the cardio theater there were some questions so I tried to get some pictures.  Remember the lights are low, as in movie theater low, so the pictures are not great.  I tried though.

Training plan:  10 miles at 10:05 min/mi
Treadmill run:  10.25 miles total (2 mi @ 6.0 mph, 3 mi @ 5.9 mph, 1 mi @ 6.0 mph, 3 mi @ 6.1, 0.75 mi @ 6.0 mph, 0.25 mi @ 7.0 mph, cool off how ever the machine decided I was supposed to cool for 5 mins)

Wasting Time

The internet as sucked up a lot of my time these past few days.  I have been doing a few productive things, but nothing too taxing.  One site I love visiting is Wordle.  It is so much fun to play around on it and click "randomize" over and over again!  Here is the wordle for this blog I made yesterday:

Changing the Day

I think my summer experiment is finished.  I've always run on Monday mornings knowing that if I didn't start my Monday morning running I was more likely to skip running the rest of the week.  I've been trying out this Monday equals rest day schedule and it is not working for me.  I have a wicked hard time getting out of bed in the morning every single day of the week when I don't run on Monday.  So, back to Monday running I go just as soon as Monday comes around again.

I did manage to drag myself out of my bed this morning for my planned seven miles this morning.  1 mile easy...break...2 miles at tempo pace...roll IT bands...1 mile easy + 1 mile tempo...have conversation with self...1 mile temp + 1 mile easy.  It was not easy.  It was not terribly fun.  It was hot.  It is DONE!!  Now, to see if I can do a repeat (although with fewer miles) tomorrow morning.

Yesterday I had a double planned:  speed work in the morning and mentoring at No Boundaries in the evening.  I got caught up in The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest so instead of running on Tuesday morning I got an extra hour of reading done.  Needless to say, I finished the book yesterday.  It was a great wrap-up to the series and well worth the read.

Last night I made it to No Boundaries after having missed last week.  We did a run/walk for 1.25 miles.  The group I was with was doing great so we did a longer run/shorter walk than was scheduled.  They finished all 1.25 miles with gusto and are looking forward to going farther.

Instead of having ~6.5 miles for the day, I had 1.25.  Better than nothing, but still an oops.

When No Boundaries was finished I hopped in my car, snapped a quick picture and headed to the YMCA 5K that was being held nearby.  I knew I was not going to be there to run the race, but some friends were running and I was there to cheer them on as they crossed the finish line. It was fun seeing all the runners come in, but I was longing to join in.  I ended up seeing quite a few people I knew last night, some I hadn't seen in a while and some I see quite often.  It reminded me I should probably get out more often.  When the race is done I went out to Moe's with Melissa and Katie.  It was wonderful to have a night out!  Thanks ladies.

When I got home last night I turned on my alarm, set out my running things (just like usual) and then crashed.  This morning I woke up almost 90 minutes after my alarm had gone off.  Oops, missed my run again.  I'm not going to loose any sleep over missing my run or my make up run.  I just hope that third time is the charm because I have 7 miles on tap for tomorrow morning and I really need to go for a run after last night's filling dinner.

Rohto Review and Giveaway - Closed

I was lucky enough to be asked to try out some eye drops.  If you are anything like me then you wear your contacts too many hours and your eyes get dry.  So, when I was asked if I wanted to try out some eye drops I was glad to.

I was sent two different Rohto drops:  hydra (for dry eyes) and cool (for redness relief).   I focused on the hydra drops because after hours on the computer, spending time in and outdoors on top of the long hours of wearing contacts my eyes are dry.  Here is what the company’s site has to say about hydra:
Specifically formulated to lubricate and provide long-lasting moisture for dry, irritated eyes with the closest hydration to normal tears, while also providing the brand's signature "kick" with a cooling sensation.
Uses:
Lubricating Eye Drops
Restores Moisture
Relieves Irritation
Cooling
I was careful in that the direction did say to remove contacts prior to using.

Pros:
  • First eye drops that actually felt like they were still lubricating after five minutes
  • Smooth feeling in the eye (after a few minutes)
  • Clear bottle so you can see how much is left and to make sure the solution is still clear and thus good

Cons:
  • Could be named fire instead of hydra.  I expected discomfort because drops are always uncomfortable for me and I usually cry for a few minutes after putting drops in, but WHOA!  I wasn’t expecting the cooling to be so extreme.
  • Cannot have contacts in during use, must wait 15 minutes to put contacts back in

The second bottle was cool for redness relief.  Rhoto says this about cool:
A general purpose eye drop that combines redness relief with a gentle cooling sensation.
Uses:
Redness Relief Eye Drops
Lubricant
Gentle Cooling Sensation

Pros:
  • Much more comfortable to put in my eyes than the hydra
  • Clear bottle so you can see how much is left and to make sure the solution is still clear and thus is still good
  • Relieves minor redness in the eyes
  • My eyes did not dry out after a few minutes as they normally do with eye drops

Cons:
  • Cannot have contacts in during use, must wait 15 minutes to put contacts back in
  • Eyelids feel very heavy after putting the drops in, but it only lasted a couple of minutes

Will I keep using these?  Yes, though I am more likely to use the cool drops because they are more comfortable (especially in the first few minutes).

Fitting In The Long Run

This weekend was different because ADP and I both had to do our long runs on Sunday.  Most weekends one of us will run on Saturday (usually ADP) and the other will run on Sunday.  This morning we both needed to run and the challenge is that we are both early morning people.  We both heard the paper being delivered at 4:15.  I swear we both heard every bird say good morning from 5 a.m. on.  The plan was for ADP go for his run at 6 so I could sleep in.  Well...sleeping did not happen this morning so while ADP was on his run I started mine on the treadmill while the kids were sleeping.

This morning's run was ADP's first double digit run!  According to him, he tried to slow down so he would make it through all 10 miles.  I learned a few things about ADP's affinity for numbers this morning when I looked at his Garmin Connect information.  The training plan called for 10 miles so he logged 10.66 miles. He said he tried to slow down which made his average moving pace 7:07 min/mi.  He ran 6, stopped home quickly for water and his first gel (Hammer Nutrition's Montana Huckleberry flavored gel, perfect for my Montana hubby) and went back out to finish his run.  (Now I'll find out if ADP reads this blog because he'll say something to me about this:  if he can run this 'slowed down' pace for another 2.6 miles he has a good chance of finishing in the top 40 for the half out of 800!)

I mentioned my run started on the treadmill.  Well, I got up right after ADP left and I had just enough time to get four miles in on the treadmill before getting the kiddos up for the day.  My training plan said PHMP + 30 sec, a.k.a. 10:15 min/mi, so I got as close as I could on the treadmill with 10:12 for 4 miles.  I tried out a new fuel this morning:  Perpetuem in Caffe Latte.  I didn't have to take any gel along for my outside run, which I loved, but the perpetuem made me very thirsty.  I'll have to try it again another weekend (it says for events lasting longer than 2 hours and my HM's take longer than 2 hours so I figured why not?).

I got the kids up and had about a 30 min wait for ADP to get back.  When ADP returned Maddie was practically hopping around the house like a bunny because she knew it was running day.  I usually take her out for the last part of my run, but today she joined me for the middle 3.6 miles.  When I dropped Maddie off I went back out to finish my run.  Today was a great running day!

3 Things Thursday, 8.12


  1. Time is short and three things seems just right today.  I'm counting this as one to make this post even more perfect.
  2. I did a mid-tempo 6 miler this morning.  The pace I was going for is between two mph's on the treadmill so i did 3 miles at the slower and 3 miles at the quicker pace.  The interesting thing about my run this morning is that I got off the treadmill to have a Gu after one mile.  Normally I don't bother with gel if I'm going to be less than an hour, but my stomach was one hungry beast at 5 a.m. this morning and I knew that breakfast wasn't going to be until at least 8:30, so I had a gel.  I made sure to grab one with caffeine for good measure.
  3. I'm off to the great upstairs of our house.  What do I plan after a 6 mile tempo run?  Why, painting of course.  I'm not short, but I do need a ladder to get the top half of the room painted evenly so I'll be going up and down the ladder all morning (and hopefully late afternoon if I can figure how to get both coats on today).  My legs are going to be feeling FINE tomorrow.  It is worth it because Punky is literally jumping up and down next to me waiting for me to go paint her room "Purple Dragon" so I'll sign off now.

3-by-What?

Tuesdays are turning into interesting running days.  I run two times on Tuesdays.  First run in the morning by my lonesome on my beloved treadmill.  Second run is in the evening with No Boundaries (last week was a .9 mile run/walk, this week 1.25 miles).  I'm happy that the second run is easy and I purposely picked to be with the slowest run/walkers because who knows how my legs will feel 12 hours after speed work.

My training plan says speed work today.  I've never really done speed work before so this is new for me.  Today my plan said warm-up, 3x1600 (1 min RI), cool-down.  I figured out how fast I was supposed to go on the treadmill (loving this pace conversion chart), turned on a movie and started.  It didn't take long to figure out my legs were still tight from Sunday's run.  My 1-minute rest intervals turned into .05 mi slow, turn treadmill off, get off treadmill to roll both IT bands, back on the treadmill, finish another .05 mi slow, speed up for next 1600.  The 1600's were hard and I admit I hopped off the treadmill during each 1600 to catch my breath at least once.  The problem is that while I'm normally really good at numbers, I had troubles this morning.

  • warm-up: 0 - 1.0 miles
  • first 1600:  1.0 to 2.0 mi (roughly equals 1600)
  • RI:  2.0 to 2.1
  • second 1600:  should be 2.1 to 3.1 mi (I went to 3.2...someone tell me how adding 1 gave me an extra tenth of a mile)
  • RI:  3.2 to 3.3 mi
  • last 1600:  should be 3.3 to 4.3 mi (I inadvertantly stopped at 4.2 but didn't realize it until I was at 4.37 miles)
  • cool-down:  4.2 to 5.26 miles
We'll take adding off my list of skills for the day.  Good thing the only big things I have to do today are balancing my checkbook and going to ADP's work picnic.  Maybe I'll do the checkbook tomorrow.

Thanks for all your kind comments about my 3-part run.  I will admit that I would have given up after the first five miles but I was about two miles from home so I needed to get there somehow and I was already running so I just kept running.  Upon returning home it was obvious Maddie knew what day it was.  Have you ever seen a dog wag her tail so much her whole body is moving while giving puppy-dog eyes to you?  Well, that is what I was met with and I did not have the heart to say no to my girl.  ADP offered to take her out but he did not think running on a full stomach of coffee would be a good idea.

I have been busy while away.  My in-laws were here, ADP was home from work for their visit, and I've been running.  I ran on Monday and Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday and decided to get some extra sleep on Friday morning so I did not run.  Saturday is ADP's day for his long run (more on this another day) so I stayed home and took care of things around here.  On Sunday I ran again.

Sunday's run was a three part run.  I just was not feeling it, but I did the best I could.  I don't know if it was the vino, food, cake, or lack of long-nights of sleep...
I was up an at 'em at 6:07 a.m..
Training goal:  9 miles at PHMP + 20 sec

Run 1
Miles:  5.0 miles
Pace:  10:03/mi
Water:  20 oz
Food stuffs:  1/2 banana before starting, Hammer vanilla gel at mile 4 (neither sat well)
Splits:  9:53, 9:54, 10:11, 10:31, 9:44
Called it quits:  at the 5-mile mark, could not keep pushing (was ready to give up at 3 miles so I'm happy with 5 miles)

Run 2
Started at the 5.0 mile mark of Run 1
Miles:  2.14 miles
Splits:  10:16, 9:57, 9:47 equiv
Called it quits:  at my front door step

Run 3:
Started as soon as I dropped my handheld and got Maddie's leash on her
Miles:  1.54 miles
Splits:  10:25, 10:13 equiv
Tired and hurting human:  1
Extremely happy dog:  1

I didn't quite finish my 9 miles and I most certainly did not do my PHMP + 20 sec for the whole thing, but I did run.  My left-hip wouldn't cooperate so I've been busy rolling and stretching the left-leg tightness out.

Turning "Never" Positive

Here are a few musings from a middle of the pack runner.

I am happy where I am and I try to turn the negatives to positives.  I like to say "never say never," but I am pretty certain the following never statements will be true forever.  I am okay with all of them because they are me, the optimistic mid-pack runner.

  • I will never run a 20 min 5K.  I will never run a 25 min 5K.  I will try to enjoy the shorter distance.  I will encourage and cheer others on.
  • I will never qualify for Boston (okay, this as an assumption because I've never run a marathon...once again, I'm pretty sure of my statement).  I will challenge myself someday and run the best marathon I can run.
  • I will never look like a "runner" (you know the look - long & lean with great legs).  Genetics are against me on this one.  I will ignore the questioning up-down looks I get from people when they find out I am a runner.  This is me and my body; if you have a problem with it then it is your problem.
  • I will never give up some vices.  I can eat dark chocolate and drink wine because of the mileage I put in as a runner.
  • I will never give up.
(In case it didn't come through:  this is not a woe-is-me post, it is a I am a strong person post.)

Running today was hot, even though I was on my treadmill in the basement.  I did speed work and my rest intervals were a little longer than they were supposed to be because I needed water and to wipe the sweat off my face after each interval.  Here's the fun I had:  1 mile warm-up, 1200, 1000, 800, 600, 400, 200 (with ~200m RI), 1+ mile cool-down.

My in-laws arrive tonight so I'll be here, but won't have time to comment on all your great blogs.

Are You Ready for August?

Are you ready?  July is finished and August is already underway.  I started August with a run and it was mostly wonderful.

July was not a high mileage month, but I am okay with the miles I ran.  July running recap in three sentences:  We were on vacation for ten days and I managed to exercise on four of them.  I started training for my next half marathon.  I ran 75.6 miles.

What does August have in store for me?  Higher mileage (I'm only assuming), different shoes, lots of time at the pool, company, and doing a lot of relaxing.  What better way to start the month than with a run?!

Thursday:  5 mile tempo run
Friday:  Rest or a few easy miles
Saturday/Sunday:  rest one day/ 9 miles at PHMP + 20 sec
